Your state of legal residence usually has authority regarding your gender status. Before you change your gender status in our records, we recommend that you make changes with your state.
If you’re an Indiana resident, the Bureau of Motor Vehicles is responsible for authorizing your state identity. If you’re not an Indiana resident, check with the Bureau of Vital Statistics or Bureau of Motor Vehicles in your state.

Send us your documentation
Use our secure contact form to submit your documentation as described below. Updates to your record usually take about a day, but may take longer depending on the time of year. If your record hasn’t updated after a week, contact us to find out what’s going on.
What we need from you
Indiana University accepts the same documentation required by the state of Indiana. It’s to your benefit to have the state-required documentation and an updated driver’s license before you change your academic record.
Note that your legal name and date of birth on documents you present to IU must match Social Security Administration records. If your current legal name is different from the primary name on your IU record, follow the process for changing your name. A gender update is usually associated with a name change, and the required documentation is similar.
We generally accept only original documents or certified copies from the issuing agency. We prefer to make our documentation copies from your legal and physician-provided original documents. As a courtesy, we’ll make our copies from your documentation copies if obtaining original documentation will cost you money.
We may refuse any document that appears to be fraudulent, unreliable, altered, or expired. All documents must be in English or must be presented with a verifiably accurate English translation.
