Diplomas

All about your diploma

You’ll get a red IU diploma cover—but not the diploma itself—at Commencement. There are a few steps you need to take to ensure you get your diploma:

  • Apply to graduate
  • Verify or update your Degree name before your degree is awarded
  • Verify or update your Student Home address (or Diploma address, if you have one) before your degree is awarded
  • Make sure there are no holds on your account preventing transcript/diploma release

All diplomas other than professional diplomas are 8 ½ x 11 inches. Professional diplomas (Doctor of Jurisprudence and Doctor of Optometry) are 16 x 20 inches.

How to get your diploma

We’ll mail your diploma to your Student Home address (or Diploma address, if you have one) 8 to 10 weeks after you graduate (for May, summer, and December graduates), once we’ve verified your final grades and that you completed your degree requirements.

If your Student Home address is in the United States, you can expect to get your diploma in one to four weeks after we mail it.

If you haven’t received your diploma four months after graduation, please use the Secure Contact Form to let us know. Select "Diploma Question" from the Topic dropdown and include your degree date and degree type.

If you have an international Student Home address, you can expect to get your diploma in six to eight weeks after we mail it. Diplomas are sent via U.S. Air Mail.

If you haven’t received your diploma five months after graduation, please use the Secure Contact Form to let us know. Select "Diploma Question" from the Topic dropdown and include your degree date and degree type.

In a hurry or delivering internationally?

For a quicker and more secure way to receive your diploma, you can purchase express shipping for $25 to a domestic (United States) address or for $45 to an international address. You must complete an Express Shipping request form.

Express shipping expedites the delivery process (but not the printing process) of your diploma and provides tracking information. We recommend using express shipping for international addresses since regular mail service outside of the U.S. may take up to 8 weeks to be delivered. Our express shipping services typically deliver internationally in about one week and the tracking information helps ensure successful delivery.

Electronic Diplomas (CeDiplomas)

If you graduated in May 2018 or after, you have the option to get a CeDiploma—an official, secure, and verifiable proof of your degree completion.

CeDiplomas can be used by future employers, licensing agencies, or any other third party to verify your achievement. After you have purchased your CeDiploma, you may share it with anyone you choose.

CeDiplomas are available about one to two months after your graduation date (unless you have a hold on your record). Once available, you will be sent an email to your IU email providing you ordering details.

More information can be found at cecredential.iu.edu.

Changing your name on your diploma

The name on your diploma will be the same as your Degree name on record at the time your diploma is ordered. You can use a variation of your legal name or your chosen name on your diploma. Please consider that if you will be moving abroad for work or study, or pursuing professional licensing, you may encounter problems if the name on your diploma does not match your legal name.
