GPA Calculation

GPA Calculator
Before You Calculate

Once grades are official, your semester and cumulative grade-point average (GPA) calculations will appear in OneStart and on the official Indiana University academic record as maintained by the Office of the Registrar.

This is important: All GPA calculations are based on official IU Bloomington grade values.

Note that cumulative GPA and hours' calculations applied to degree requirements and graduation are maintained by the offices of the deans and recorders of your school. They may differ from those appearing on the university record. Consult the student records office of your school for all questions pertaining to degree hours and degree GPA.

Grades in OneStart will tell you when final grades will become available.

Your Semester GPA

You can calculate a projected semester GPA before your semester grades are officially released by using our IU GPA Calculator. It’s easy!

The only information you need is the number of classes you’re taking this semester, the number of credits each class is worth, and the letter grade you’re expecting to receive in each of those classes.

Once you’ve calculated your projected semester GPA, you’ll also have the option to calculate your cumulative GPA.

Formula for Official Transcripts

On official transcripts, one of the following total academic record Grade Point Averages is reflected:

Undergraduate GPA Hours and GPA: GPA is calculated by dividing total undergraduate credit points by total undergraduate GPA hours.
Graduate GPA Hours and GPA: GPA is calculated by dividing total graduate credit points by total graduate GPA hours.
Cumulative GPA Hours and GPA: GPA is calculated by dividing total IU credit points by total IU GPA hours.

Remember that all GPA calculations are based on official IU Bloomington grade values. You can calculate your GPA by hand as long as you know the number of classes you’re taking this semester, the number of credits each class is worth, and the letter grade you’re expecting to receive in each of those classes.

Please note: Academic progress and graduation GPA hours may differ from GPA hours and GPA described above because of program requirements. Check with the records office of your school.
